He's one of those drivers who doesn't need to be in the spotlight to become a star. Denny Hulme is probably the most discreet and unknown of the F1 world champions. Nicknamed "The Bear," he owes this nickname as much to his physique as to his aversion to long sentences. His rural origins make it difficult for him to speak.
Two years. That's how long it took him to be crowned in 1967, driving the Brabham Repco of his illustrious colleague "Big Jack" Brabham. It was a strange season. Straddling the two 1.5 and 3.0 liter engine regulations, high-performance and reliable single-seaters were rare that year. Hulme took advantage of this and won two races and the title. He then joined his compatriot Bruce MacLaren whose F1 program was just beginning.
Mac Laren also entered prototypes in the lucrative and spectacular American CAN AM series, the aim being to finance F1 with CAN AM revenues. Mac Laren exercised unchallenged domination with legendary cars until 1972 (and the arrival of Porsche and its legendary 917s…). The series was then nicknamed "THE BRUCE (Mac Laren) AND DENNY (Hulme) SHOW". 78 races were organized during the golden age of the series, between 1966 and 1974, the Mac Larens won 48 and Hulme alone 22. "The Bear" was then at the height of his glory.
